The 2023 Student Unmanned Systems EELISA competition is intended to foster interest in Unmanned Vehicle Systems (UVS), particularly Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and other types of UVS (such as Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV), Unmanned Sea Vessels (USV)), to encourage our students’ interest in UVS technologies and contribute to their careers, and to engage students in a challenging mission.

The competition requires students to design, integrate, report on, and demonstrate a UVS capable of autonomous movement and navigation, remote sensing via onboard payload sensors, sensor fusion, and execution of a specific set of tasks.

The competition is open to teams of students from universities and colleges around the world, especially from EELISA partners, who are interested in advancing the field of unmanned and electrical drone technologies. The competition has two phases: the Technical Design and Flight Readiness Review Presentation, and the Mission Demonstration. The presentation details a team’s UVS design and the team’s testing and preparedness, and the demonstration simulates a mission in which the UVS and team are evaluated.

The mission consists of autonomous tasks, obstacle avoidance, object detection, and drone delivery. The mission will be held at Aerodromul Clinceni from September 25th to 29th, 2023. The challenge will consist of several steps, including: Developing and programming drones to complete tasks autonomously; On-line social media presentations of teams work (YouTube videos); In-person challenge event; Award ceremony and recognition of the winning teams; Competition report as an extended abstract aimed at giving visibility to the work carried out by the FTEM EELISA Community as well as by EELISA students and staff at the First EELISA International Conference, Bucharest 04-06 October 2023.

The earthquake disaster in Turkey and Syria is a local trouble that had a significant impact on the affected areas. However, natural disasters like earthquakes can happen anywhere in the world, making the challenge relevant globally.
The purpose of the missions is to simulate a post-earthquake city first responders’ aid done with Unmanned Vehicle Systems.

TARGET Group (e.g. students (bachelor/master/PhD), academics, researchers, educators, broader society, EELISA project management):
Teams must be composed of undergraduate (bachelor degree) students and graduate (master, PhD) enrolled in their university for the academic year 2022-2023.

When does the activity start?

Teams registration Will be opened fro 2nd of June 2023. Mission demonstrations Will take place near Bucharest 25-28 September 2023.

When does the activity end?

The activity will end 29th of September with the award ceremony, but willing teams members can stay longer, especially if they will attend 1st EELISA International Conference (4-6 Oct.).
During the Conference there will be oirganized an exibition where teams can have stands to expose their achievements in the Competition.

Deadline for Registration is 1st July 2023, but media coverage of the misión demonstrations is desired, so deadline for publication is to be 6 Oct.
